Orchid Kokedama Workshop

Get ready to dig in and get creative as you craft your very own orchid kokedama! Kokedama is the Japanese art of growing plants in a moss-covered ball of soil. In this hands-on class, you’ll be guided step-by-step to transform a beautiful orchid into a unique hanging or tabletop display wrapped in moss. Whether you hang it in a window or showcase it as a living centerpiece, your orchid kokedama is sure to bring beauty to any space. No green thumb required — just bring your love for plants and creativity! All materials to create your kokedama are provided.

Meet your instructors, Ellie and Liz!

Ellie joined our team in August 2022 as our Educator and Volunteer Coordinator. After growing up nearby in Akron, NY, Ellie went on to continue her education at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Education and Interpretation. After graduating in the midst of the pandemic, she traveled and found a passion for educating people about environmental science and community outreach in Syracuse and Colorado before moving to the city of Buffalo. Ellie has a passion for all aspects of the natural world, with special interests in prehistoric plants, birds of prey, and mycology. She has recently completed her Masters of Education in Science Communication at the University at Buffalo and enjoys cooking, traveling, kayaking, hiking, and hanging out with her cats and tortoise in her free time! 

Liz Gatto is a new face at the Botanical Gardens, joining our team in April of 2023 as our Educator and Program Coordinator. Liz graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Art History with Museum Studies from Niagara University. She is passionate about museum education and is excited to bring her creativity to the Botanical Gardens. Prior to joining the team, Liz worked in the department of Art and Family Programs for several years at Artpark in Lewiston, NY and has interned with multiple galleries including the Buffalo AKG Art Museum. Liz is also an artist herself, her love for botany and nature shines through her personal artwork. She is very much looking forward to getting the public inspired by the gardens and offering creative workshops. In her spare time Liz enjoys drawing, painting, traveling, drinking coffee, visiting museums, and taking care of her many houseplants!
